Overview

Gainax (ガイナックス, Gainakkusu), stylized as GAINAX is a Japanese anime studio and regular member company of the The Association of Japanese Animations. The first president was Toshio Okada.

The company produced such anime works as Neon Genesis Evangelion, which became a social phenomenon, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Gunbuster, etc. In addition to visual works, the company has produced hit titles such as the Princess Maker game series.

The company name is derived from "Gaina", which means "large or amazing" in the Umpaku dialect, and "X", which stands for unknown.

The company was founded in 1984 to produce the animation film Royal Space Force.

The animation production department was de facto abolished after Wish Upon the Pleiades in 2015 and has not produced any animation since then.

The staff that belonged to the company have scattered to various animation studios and all remaining members have been taken over by Fukushima Gainax (there is no capital relationship between the companiy and Gainax).
