Background

Prior to becoming a Stone Hashira of the demon slayer corps, Gyomei Himejima lived in a temple with 9 other orphan children. The area where Gyomei lived was known to have frequent demon attacks, so Gyomei always burn wisteria to ward them off.

One particular night one of the children broke the temple rules and went beyond the borders. He was then caught by a demon and bargained his life for Gyomei's and the other children's life. The child later invited the demon inside the temple by putting out the wisteria incense. When the news came, Gyomei told all the other children to stay inside the temple. Doubting Gyomei's ability to protect, all children except for the youngest, Saya, escaped the temple and subsequently were murdered by the demon. Fueled by rage, Gyomei began using his hands to attack the demons. It was during this fight that he had realized he held an immense amount of power. After the incident, Saya, due to her young age, has misspoken and implied that Gyomei had killed everyone without mentioning the demon. Gyomei was later charged for murder but then was later saved by the leader of the demon slayer corp Kagaya Ubuyashiki. He later joined the corp and become the Stone Hashira in two months.

Personality

Gyomei Himejima embodies the classic gentle giant archetype. He often comes off as kind and soft-spoken. He is also seen as being devoutly religious, carrying his prayer beads at all times and giving prayers whenever the appropriate situation arises.

Despite his gentle nature, Gyomei is also suspicious of others. Due to his doubtful nature, it can take a while for Gyomei to trust and open himself up to other people. When he regards somebody as trustworthy, however, Gyomei is unwavering in his devotion to those who he deem worthy.
