Overview
Rei Ayanami (綾波レイ, Ayanami Rei) is a taciturn and expressionless 14-year-old girl from the Evangelion series. She is shorter and smaller than Asuka.
In one monologue, she is described as "a woman who does not shed blood," which some believe means that she does not menstruate.
She is the exclusive pilot of the Evangelion Unit-00 and is called the First Child.
Background
A few months before the start of the main story, she was seriously injured in a runaway accident during a startup experiment of Eva Unit-00. In the first episode, Shinji refuses to board the Eva Unit-01, but she makes a shocking appearance in front of Shinji covered in blood-soaked bandages, and her tragic appearance leads him to decide to board the Eva Unit-01.
Appearance
She has shaggy light blue hair, red eyes, and translucent white skin, and her appearance closely resembles Shinji Ikari's late mother, Yui Ikari (however, Shinji has little memory of his mother before she died, and since he grew up without any information about her afterwards, he does not know this fact).
Personality
She is extremely emotionally inept, to the point that she does not seem to have what could be called an ego. She is not emotionless, but has her own emotions, and is extremely clumsy and inept at expressing her feelings.
Relationships
Gendo Ikari
She has little interest in other people, but he seems to be strangely open to Gendo Ikari, Shinji's father and the commander-in-chief of NERV. She is always faithful to his assigned tasks, and even when fighting in her Evangelion, she does so mechanically, without any personal feelings at all, and sometimes without regard for her own life. She herself explains the reason for this in a single sentence: "It's our bond".
Shinji Ikari
While she seems to have a close bond with Gendo she gradually opens her heart to Shinji, who has been very kind to her since the "Operation Yashima" in episode 6, and she begins to be aware of his existence. She also begins to show some human feelings toward Shinji, and even interacts with other people to some extent.
Asuka Langley
She has bad feelings toward Asuka, who is also an Evangelion pilot, for various reasons, and therefore rarely interacts with her.
