Released in late 2005, it is the very first 7th-generation video game console. Like other 7th-generation consoles, it comes with Internet connectivity as standard and can connect to the Xbox Live online service.

While being a successor to the Xbox, the hardware is completely different; it has a PowerPC-based CPU co-developed by Microsoft and IBM. However the Xbox 360 has backward compatibility with some Xbox game titles.

The original Xbox 360s were plagued by the RROD (Red Ring of Death) issue mostly because of the wrong type of lead-free solder Microsoft used in the first models. Later models fixed said issue.

Microsoft later introduced the Kinect motion-sensing camera for Xbox 360 in 2010.

While it was popular in the U.S., the same cannot be said to other regions. It was very unpopular in Japan.
