Important Terms
Titan
The primary antagonists of the series. A mysterious existence that only seems to live to prey on humankind.
Walls
Human living areas are surrounded by these walls to protect them against the Titans. The height of these gigantic walls average about 50 meters and are about 10 meters thick. The outermost wall, named “Wall Maria,” totals about 3200 kilometers in length.
- Wall Maria is the most outer wall protecting the human kingdom. Eren and the others are from Shiganshina District, which is located inside Wall Maria. The first attack was made here.
- Wall Rose is the center wall protecting the human kingdom after Wall Maria. In the year 845, Wall Maria was breached by the titans and Wall Rose then became the most outer wall.
- Wall Sina is the innermost wall protecting the kingdom. It’s where the royal castle and metro area of the city are located.
Military
The military is an organization that deals with military affairs and public order, inside and outside the walls. Candidates for the military are people who trained and graduate from the trainee squad. After graduation, they are assigned to their respective posts.
- The Military Police are like the imperial guards of the King, while also maintaining order within the walls. It’s the safest part of the military but the most corrupted.
- The Stationary Guard strengthen defense by reinforcing the walls and defend those inside the walls. Among the military, this sector has the most units.
- The Scouting Legion is the only sector that is posted outside the walls. Only the most elite are allowed into this sector but the fatality rate is also very high due to constant battles with titans.
- The Trainee Squad consists of future soldiers ages 12 and older. To create independent, strong warriors, these soldiers face rigorous training and graduate to join the military.
Weapons
For hand-to-hand combat, swords are used. Guns (mostly muskets) and cannons are used, but appear to be ineffective against the titans.
- Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear is the standard equipment used by common soldiers against the titans. This allows soldiers to head directly to the weak point of the titans.
The Mystery
From the beginning of the story, there has been various foreshadowings and elements leading to the main mystery of this story. Each mystery is solved as the plot develops, but many more enigmas come into play. It allows interactivity from the audience which makes it intriguing for the viewer.
